BOTANICAL ARK
The Tailor, Australia

For 40 years husband-and-wife team, Alan and Susan Carle, have been cultivating a space in Queensland, Australia for the conservation of plants that indigenous rainforest cultures use for everything from food and shelter to medicine and cosmetics. In fact, they have the largest collection of ethnobotanical plants in the world.

“These special people are the Jane Goodall of rainforest plants!” says Drew at the Tailor, who also told me they were awarded the International Award for Biodiversity in Food by Slow Food International. Staying at the Botanical Ark retreat remains among his top five things to do in Australia and the only way to get in is through The Tailor. Private garden tours, educational foraging and incredible plant-based feasts await.
